Team B Wins The First Scrimmage Of Capitals’ Development Camp

By Jack Anderson

2011 sixth-round draft pick Travis Boyd scored the game winning goal and Aaron Schmit added an insurance marker late to give Team B a 4-2 victory over Team A in the first scrimmage of this week’s Capitals’ development camp.

Team B controlled play, dictating the tempo with smooth puck movement and crisp D-to-D passing. They jumped out to an early lead on a Caleb Herbert goal and broke a 1-1 tie in the second period on a Stanislav Galiev marker.

Galiev, one of the Capitals’ top prospects, crept in front of net and Boyd hit him with a pass from behind the net. The Russian lifted a puck past rookie goalie Steffen Soberg and Team B never looked back.

Boyd paced Team B with a goal and an assist as he looked very comfortable playing both center and wing. He and Mattias Sjogren took the bulk of the faceoffs for Team B and were two of the more polished players on the ice.

Andrew Cherniwchan and Garrett Mitchell scored for Team A. Goaltender Philipp Grubauer allowed just one goal and after the scrimmage Bruce Boudreau said Grubauer did an excellent job limiting second chance opportunities.

Some observations:

-Sjogren was the most well rounded player on the ice. He won 7-12 faceoffs (mostly in the defensive zone) including 5-8 on draws against Eakin.

-Eakin told reporters he spent the first period and a half shaking off rust. In the later stages of the game, he flashed a few times knifing through defenders on several occasions to create scoring chances. He also added a late assist on a goal from Garrett Mitchell.

-Dmitry Orlov was aggressive on both ends of the ice. He has shown a bit of mean streak throughout the week and laid a punishing hip check in the second period. However, he gets overanxious in the offensive zone and moves up into the play too often. He has the speed to be offensive minded, but at times he overextended himself.

-Galiev has a solid frame and is hard to knock off the puck. He is a creative player with a good shot and an awareness that puts him in a position to score. He was one of the better players today.

-D Wade Epp left the scrimmage in the second period after a hit along the boards. He did not return. F Patrick Stefishen was also injured. Both players will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

-Late in the third, Dustin Stevenson and Garrett Ross dropped the gloves after Schmit’s goal.
